With summer in full swing, you might be thinking about getting started on home improvement projects you’ve been putting off all year. In fact, if you’re like many of our customers, it’s likely that one of those projects is window replacement—which happens to be one of the most popular exterior remodeling projects for homeowners during the summer.
Pittsburgh replacement windows that are professionally installed by qualified window contractors not only improve your curb appeal, but they can also help you save on your energy bill by making sure your AC unit doesn’t have to work so hard. Take a look at some of the reasons why updating your home with energy-efficient windows over the summer is such a great idea—and how our experts at Legacy Remodeling can get you started with your summer remodel today.
Keep it Cool with Energy Efficient Windows
Just as your heater works overtime in the winter, your AC works extra hard over the summer. Not only does the air conditioner cost a healthy amount to run day in and day out over the summer months, but it also works a lot harder than it needs to in homes filled with windows that need replacing.
With improving technology and construction materials, windows today are far more capable of helping keep your home cool all summer than the windows of the past.
Some of the ways that that window products have improved include the following:
- Vinyl Materials: By far, vinyl window frames are the most popular choice for homeowners. Not only are they stylish, but they are also incredibly energy efficient. The vinyl frames have chambers built within that are filled with extra insulation. The increased insulation means that the rising energy bill is about to see a significant cost reduction. Other options like wood frames are still viable and effective, but compared to vinyl they are much higher maintenance.
- Improved Technology: It’s no longer enough to slap some glass together and wrap it in a frame. Now, the glass is getting help through a type of insulating gas that may be odorless and practically invisible, but that doesn’t mean it’s not extremely effective. This solution goes by the name Low-E, which stands for low emissivity. The way Low-E works is by lowering the amount of heat transference that occurs. Normally, the sun and hot air still pass through the glass via conduction and radiation, but with this application, that’s a concern best left to the past.
- Gas Power: In case the technology wasn’t cool enough, there are gases that can be inserted between multi-pane windows that help boost insulation. These gases like Argon and Krypton are heavier than oxygen, and therefore inhibit the movement of the hot air you don’t want passing through from outside.
- Double, Triple, and Quadruple: Windows are rarely single-pane today. In fact, the standard is double-pane. That being said, triple and quadruple-pane windows are growing in popularity by leaps and bounds. The reason for this is the superior insulation and energy-efficiency with these options. The more panes your window uses, the lower your energy bill is going to be.
